Green Lantern is a superhero appearing in DC Comics. Several characters have held the mantle, but they all share a connection to the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force.
The original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, first appeared in All-American Comics #16 (July 1940). He derived his powers from a magical green flame.
However, the most well-known Green Lantern is likely Hal Jordan. He was chosen by a dying alien, Abin Sur, to inherit his power ring and become a member of the Lantern Corps, charged with protecting his sector of space. This version debuted in Showcase #22 (October 1959).
The Lantern Corps is powered by willpower, and each ring allows its wielder to create constructs of solid light. Other notable Green Lanterns include Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner, each adding their unique perspectives and strengths to the Corps. These characters each have varying origins to their initial contact with the Green Lantern Corps.
